Nightmare - Stories of the Leonberger Union

Leonberger databases.

There are at this moment 3 so called “Leonberger Databases”.

The data in these databases has not been reviewed and is not completely reliable.

Mrs. Edith Steffen was active in two of these databases

Leonberger databases
- might it be "so-called" or "other-called"

Databases and the data contained can't be more reliable than the sources data are taken from - and there had indeed been corrections necessary, even for data from the "German Studbook"

Mrs. Steffen was indeed involved in all 3 databases as the 2 new databases are generated from the original one.

Mrs. Steffen was owner of a Leonberger, who was scored with severe hipdisplasia by Prof. Dr. Loeffler.

She then got herself a HD-free certificate through Belgium but could still not use her male for breeding in Germany.
the concerned Leonberger, owned by Mrs. Steffen was NEVER SCORED / EVALUATED at Univ. Hohenheim.

Mrs. Steffen "got herself NOTHING" - the concerned Leonberger was X-rayed at University Ghent/Belgium by Prof. Dr. H. van Bree, a well-known and reputable radiologist, and the evaluation was done by the Belgian HD-commission (btw. an official and
FCI-recognized organization whose results have to be accepted
by all FCI-member-countries)

Mrs. Steffen had never the intention to breed with her male
in Germany.

She had then bred two litters in Poland and sold the puppies in Germany.

Mrs. Steffen bred indeed (in co-operation/breeding alliance with a Polish breeder) in Poland - and yes, 2 puppies went to Germany.
One did live in the Steffen-family, the other one went to a family who was urgently waiting for a puppy, sired by the concerned male.

Where is there the problem ?
2 puppy-applicants less for a DCLH-breeder ???
Or whatelse ???

It must be clear that such actions don’t add to the level of confidence in the collected data.

A warning will be placed on the Union website, stating that data from the three databases is not guaranteed by Leonberger clubs and the Union.

Several Leonberger Clubs have databases for the Leonbergers in their countries, these databases will be linked from the Union website.

It must be clear that such comments don't add to the level of confidence in an International Union.

Well, the data might not be granted by the Leonberger Union, but indeed the data consist as well in data collected by other
Leonberger Clubs and submitted to the Leonberger database.

Therewith the Union will "indirectly" link to the "so-called" Leonberger databases as part of these data, collected by various clubs, are content of the "so-called" Leonberger databases.

Polyneuropathy.

Neuropathies occur in all dog breeds. Until now we have not enough info about the severity and number of cases.

At least 5 researchers occupy themselves with neuropathies in Leonbergers, unluckily information is not or only partially exchanged.

Veterinarian Hans Lieven will write a new article for the Union’s website.

Secretary Hein Sibrijns will collect the data and will send a report to the member clubs in spring 2007.

Neuropathies are caused by various underlying diseases, for the Leonberger the research is about the "inheritable type".

Ned Patterson DVM, PhD, Assistant Professor ,
University of Minnesota, College of Veterinary Medicine

La faculte de medicine de Creteil (Doktorarbeit)

Univ. München - Neuro-Pathologie Dr. Matiasek (Biopsies) as well as some neurologists (Dr. Gödde, Dr. Rentmeister) and single cases, diagnosed (University Hannover, animal hospital)

- to name just a few institutions dealing with that matter -

these are a few places where the Union could get info about
the no. and the severity of the inheritable type of PN
in the Leonberger

Infos would be exchanged, at least from North America is well known that several attempts to exchange info with European countries (esp. the country of origin) did fail

Other breeds suffer from diseases as well.........this is true
but what does it help the owner of an affected Leonberger to know that "other breeds" suffer from diseases as well ????
